Between Chimborazo and Carihuayrazo
With Climb Carihuayrazo 5100m, 16,470 Ft
Degre of Diffilculty: C

Carihuayrazo is located just north of Chimborazo and rises out of the valley of Abraspungo. Its tongue-twisting name means "man of strong wind" or "mountain with much wind".

The climb of Carihuayrazo is relatively easy and can be done by those without any previous mountaineering experience. This is your chance to climb a 5000m. plus mountain if you're in at least average physical condition.

Set in a quintessential Andean landscape with llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and local Indians tending their flocks; this tour will also give you a taste of the mountain cultures in Ecuador.

Itinerary:
Day 01: Quito - Hacienda Posada la Estacion
Travel from Quito by private transportation on the Pan-American Highway passing Latacunga and Ambato until we reach the acclimatisation centre "Posada la Estacion" at 3.680m in the hills of Urbina. This is a 3 hour journey with many stops and superb views along the "Avenue of the Volcanoes." After that we will have a good dinner and you can relax a bit. -/L/D

Day 02: Hacienda Posada la Estacion - Abraspungo Valley
After breakfast we start our trek towards the Abraspungo valley. We walk for approximately 5-6 hours uphill, till we reach our camp in Plazapamba. Our naturalist guide will teach us about the diverse high altitude fauna und flora. If the weather is good, you will have excellent views of the volcanoes Altar and Tungurahua.
Tungurahua is still very active, with a little luck we can see it burst with small eruptions. B/L/D

Day 03: Plazapamba - Carihuayrazo
Today we hike for approximately 6 hours through the Abraspungu valley. Picnic lunch on route. We set up our camp at 4.800 meters at the base of the Carihuayrazo near Black Lake (Laguna Negra). Good views of Chimborazo und Carihuayrazo. Excellent photographic opportunities here! B/L/D

Day 04: Climb of Carihuayrazo - Rio Blanco - Quito
Early breakfast and climb the central peak of Carihuayrazo (5.100m). Lunch at the summit. Return to the road Guaranda - Ambato in Rio Blanco and from here drive back to Quito in approx. 4 hours. End of the trip. B/L/-
