Ecuador Amazon Jungle Expeditions

Arco Iris Jungle Lodge

Arco Iris Jungle Lodge

Arcoiris Jungle Lodge is located in Amazonia, one of the most pictorial parts of Ecuador on the banks of river Napo; itself being a tributary of the largest river in the world – The Amazon. Arcoiris Jungle Lodge can be reached in one hour by motor canoe from the town of Francisco de Orellana (El Coca). The comfortable bungalows are placed on the Napo riverbank. They tried to keep the atmosphere of a virgin forest, the great tranquility of the jungle and the untouched nature so rare and thus precious nowadays.

The resort owns 50 hectares (123 acres) of primary jungle where 10 spacious bungalows are situated. The hotel restaurant, bar, swimming pool and the bungalows are connected with each other by wooden footpaths, so that even after the rain you can use your sandals or slippers to get from one building to the other.

In order to keep the jungle undisturbed and quiet there are no TV-sets or radio/audio players in the bungalows – you have always quite music in the bar, though, - but in any area of the hotel you have Internet access available via Wi-Fi using your own laptop.

Arcoiris Jungle Lodge is the only eco-resort in Ecuador with the all-inclusive service. You may leave your cash at home - you will not need it here. The pre-paid package includes literally everything from the return transfer to the meals in the restaurant, daily exciting jungle tours and alcoholic beverages in the bar.

The Amazonia is the perfect location for photography lovers, where one can find any personal taste of scenery - landscapes, panoramic views, wildlife, portraits and genre photo opportunities. The nature and the people of Ecuador are very colorful and with the excellent lighting conditions always present in Amazonia even the most novice photographer will find themselves with very professional results.

Location:
Your journey to Amazonia will begin in the city of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, which is located at 2800 meters above sea level. You will take a 40 minute flight over the Andes to the town of Coca (Pto. Francisco de Orellana). Upon arrival you will be picked up by a guide from the Arcoiris Jungle Lodge and taken across the town to the port of the Napo River by a "Chiva" bus, which is the most popular tourist vehicle in the region.

From Coca the covered motor canoe will take you down the Napo River on a 1 hour trip, during which a small snack is served. The guide will provide you with detailed information on the surrounding nature of the largest river in the Ecuadorian Amazonia.

The width of Napo river sometimes reaches almost a mile, it is often unbelievably shallow. The canoes have to zigzag their way down the river in order not to ground and not to run into the trees washed away by the strong currents.

You will also see traditional native Quechua villages situated along the Napo riverbanks with houses built on stilts.

Upon arrival at the Arcoiris Jungle Lodge and after the check-in at the hotel reception you will walk from 25 to 78 meters to the top of the hill by wooden ladder (your luggage will be delivered to your room).

At the restaurant you will be welcomed with a cocktail and snacks, and after a brief orientation you will be shown to your rooms.

Wildlife of selva:
Birds
The most diverse wildlife one can observe on the territory of Arcoiris Jungle Lodge are birds. The tours for birds watching usually start at 6.00 am, because most of the birds are active in the daytime.
The number of tropical bird species in Ecuador is around 1600, which is almost 15% of all the birds species in the world. Their diet consists of insects, fruit, seeds, nectar, etc., and there are several predator species, which are carnivorous. During a regular trip of 4 days at Arcoiris Jungle Lodge you will be able to see around 120 species of bird out of the 550 existing in the area. However, for dedicated bird lovers the number of bird species can reach 250 different species on a 5 days trip.

Amphibians
Ecuador is home to 460 out of the 4700 species of amphibian on Earth. Therefore, almost 10% of the world's population is concentrated in this small territory, representing one of the highest amphibian diversities on any continent. You can see: Toads, Rainfrogs, Treefrogs, Poison-Dart Frogs and the Amazon rainforest is so diverse that you might find additional groups as the Amazon bull frog, the glass frog, the narrow-mouthed frog and others that have not been included in this classification. Arcoiris Jungle Lodge territory has still a vast virgin and unexplored land, so there are many other species to be found.

Reptiles
This group is among the most captivating animals in Ecuador. They are one of the main reasons that travelers pursue their trip to the Amazon rainforest. However, with exception of black Caimans, you will have to look hard and be lucky to see some species from this group. Black Caimans are one of the endangered species in the Amazon basin, but luckily, in "Challuacocha", a large population is protected and can be easily found at night time.

Today there are more than 7000 species of reptiles worldwide and Ecuador is home for almost 410 species. This sum is composed by 135 lizards, 235 snakes and the rest in crocodilians and turtles.

There are three major groups that can be distinguished:
Turtles: With about 260 species worldwide, Ecuador is home of many of the most amazing species. They're rarely encountered in the wild, but in the lagoon they are pretty easy to find. There is a good chance to see the big headed Amazon River turtle or the South American yellow-footed tortoise while you're paddling in a dugout canoe through "Challuacocha".

Crocodiles and relatives: With about 22 species worldwide, they generally inspire respect and curiosity. These ancient animals are one of the main attractions at Arcoiris Jungle Lodge. Ecuador is home of 5 different species. In the Amazon Rainforest, there exists an endangered species called the "Black Caiman". These creatures can grow up to 6 meters and represent the largest Crocodile on the American continent. In our lagoon, these reptiles can be seen almost every day, both during day and night. However, it is more likely to see them at night with low tide.

Lizards and snakes: They are considered in the same group, as they have very similar skeletal traits indicating a close relationship.

Geckos: Ecuadorian geckos are small, gray or brown lizards with large eyes. They have thin and soft skin and are the first in invading walls or ceilings. Ecuador is home to 15 species of these harmless lizards.

Activities:
Rainforest trips
We will take to you to the heart of the jungle by canoe, and from the check point you will have a long hike, leading you through the primary jungle to the most untouched areas of the jungle. During your trip you will see the jungle medicinal plants and will have a chance to try some edible local fruits and insects.
If you tread quietly and carefully, with some luck you may see some of the inhabitants of the jungle - Giant Anteaters, Black-Mantled Tamarin Monkeys, poison-dart frogs and others.
You can also get a 2 hour tours in the morning or the evening to the jungle where you can see tropical animals on salt marshes (tapirs, capybaras, etc). Depending on your physical ability we can vary the level of difficulty of the trips.

Fishing
If you are fond of fishing, we will give you several opportunities to enjoy this hobby of yours at Arcoiris Jungle Lodge - you can go fishing to Lemoncocha, Napo River islands or the small lake on the grounds of the Lodge. The fish you catch can be cooked for dinner.

Night caiman watching
The population of the Black Cayman has been endangered for quite a long time, and a curved black-water lake is one of the places where these large, up to 5-meter long species are safe. The Black Cayman is not aggressive, which is what one usually expects of these reptiles, and after the sun goes down they go out to hunt. Their prey is usually fish, mammals, birds, and even anacondas. With some luck you can see them swimming slowly across the lake.

Restaurant observation
Due to the perfect location of Arcoiris Jungle Lodge and due to the policy of non-disturbance of jungle life, the Lodge is a wonderful place to observe birds. Having your lunch or dinner in the restaurant you will also have a chance to see dozens of hummingbirds flying around the beautiful plants to enjoy a lunch of their own.

Natives
One of the most interesting parts of every country is its original culture. The Quechua are the native people of Ecuador, and they will take you to the village where you can meet a Quechua family living in their traditional house. You will see the way they live in detail - their food, drinks, customs, traditions, clothing etc. Your guide and the Quechua will welcome you into their world. One of the most important things of the Quechua way of life is the fact that they are completely self-sufficient and independent of the outer world.

Night jungle trips
Most of the animals in the jungle are nocturnal. In bright daylight it is unbelievably difficult to see them even when you almost step onto them, because these animals are natural born aces of camouflage, which is dramatically important for their survival. And when the night falls, the jungle wakes up, and hundreds and thousands of species start their new active period. That includes not only insects, but also mammals such as night monkeys, many kinds of bats and Kinkajous. A trip to the night jungle is a rare opportunity to experience the touch of life that is usually hidden in the dark.
