Cotopaxi Volcano Ride - 5D/4
Degre of Diffilculty: C

Suggested Itinerary:
Day 01 Pasochoa
Our ride begins at Hacienda Santa Rita ecological reserve at 3,300 m (10824 ft.) . Following a short lessons about how to handle the horses. The ride takes us through native Andean forest until we reach the majestic “páramos” of Pasochoa Volcano enjoying the magnificent view of the neighboring mountains, we rest and enjoy a snack and continue with our journey. At the base of the rock, we hike a short distance to the summit at 4,200 m. (13,776 ft.). This is a very beautiful hike. Afterwards we return to El Porvenir farmhouse in our comfortable vehicle.

Day 02 Rumiñahui
Today our ride takes us to Rumiñahui Volcano along many trails where we can see wild bulls, local birds, wild fauna, and the marvelous landscape of the Ecuadorian highlands. We will be quite close to the peak of Rumiñahui Volcano and, if we are lucky, we may get the chance to seethe majestic Condor. Then we ride along the lower slopes of Rumiñahui and, after visiting a natural refuge of wild hummingbirds we return to the farmhouse.

Day 03 Cotopaxi National Park – El Tambo Quilindaña
We begin our ride from El Porvenir taking the lower route towards El Tambo Quilindaña and going by Pucará de Salitre, an Inca fortress. We will be riding in the shade of majestic Cotopaxi – widely considered to be the highest active volcano in the world. We reach the lagoons of Cajas, passing trough “Piedra Muchana”, a huge stone that the indigenous people would kiss asking the gods for good weather on their way to the jungle. After 7 hours riding we reach Hacienda El Tambo Quilindaña. Our guests will enjoy an excellent barbecue and rest under the candle light.

Day 04 Quilindaña
Today our ride follows the slopes of Quilindaña. First we head towards the peak of Quilindaña Volcano, reaching an altitude of 4300 m. (14,104 ft.). We visit an enchanted paper tree bark forest, an excellent example of the pristine habitats of this region. Afterwards we will return to the farmhouse.

Day 05 Hacienda El Tambo Quilindaña - Hacienda El Porvenir
Early in the morning we begin the ride along the Tambo riverbed towards Cotopaxi to take the higher route for our ride to Chirimachay, or cold refuge. We will ride along the foothills of an extinct volcano: Pailón. The horses go through Curipugyo (or site of gold) and then enter a ravine where several volcanic layers from past eruptions are clearly visible as years of flooding have cut through the rock. This path will take us back to El Porvenir, from where we return to Quito.

The Hacienda El porvenir - Vocano Land lodges its guests in a comfortable, functional and beautiful house built with native materials in keeping with the colourful construction systems typical of the area that have been used since immemorial times. Located in the Cotopaxi National Park border, it is the best option as base camp for hiking and climbing Tours, adn of course for climbing the Cotopaxi
