Cuenca was founded by the Spaniard Gil Ramirez Davalos in 1557 on the site of the Inca settlement of Tomebamba. Much of its colonial air has been preserved, with many of its old buildings constructed of the marble quarried nearby and recently renovated. In 1999 Cuenca was designated a UNESCO World heritage site. The climate is spring-like, but the nights are chilly.
