Argentina is after Brazil the second largest country in South America. It has a surface of 2.8 million qkm and is therefore only a little smaller than India. Argentina is characterised particularly by its large cultural variety and its six geographical regions. Bolivia with its 1,098,000 qkm is about as large as France and Spain together. It is not a highly populated country as it only has about 7.9 million inhabitants. Brazil is the 5th largest country on earth. With its 8.5 million square kilometres it takes nearly half of South America. If you are going to travel to Chile, you will se: In the North is the most arid desert in the world; in the Centre there are Mediterranean landscapes; in the South, forests and lakes; in the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, fiords, glacier fields and stormy pampas; and in the Antarctic, eternal whiteness. Chile is the ideal country for adventure travel. Peru is the symbol for everything that has to do with the mystical empires, which ever saw the light of the world and had their centre here in the Andes. Venezuela is the clear waters of the Caribbean; the purity of the Amazonas, the peaceful beauty of the Andes; the animal life of the central Plains; the magnificence of the Guayana highlands.

After landing on the Boca Manu runway, we change our transportation and continue our trip in a canoe. This canoe has an outboard engine and a tent roof, which gives protection against the strong sun and occasional rainfalls. The four-hour boat trip to the Manu Lodge offers us already great opportunities to get a first impression of the amazing variety of the animal world in Manu. If we are lucky, we might be able to see capybaras, large black caimans or even a shy jaguar while we are on our way to the lodge. B/L/D

Day 29: Manu Jungle exploration
The original lake, which borders on the Manu Lodge, accommodates large communities of the most amazing birds, monkeys and caimans. Sometimes a family of the giant-otter species comes to the lake for a short visit. Only recently, the female has given birth here to two of her babies. If we are lucky we might be able to watch them from the landing stage, while they are looking for food in the lake and eat their hunt afterwards. Even though we will only be 15-20m away from them, they will tolerate our presence completely. Through out the day there will be an active coming and going of many kinds of birds. Among them will be parrots, prevail falcons and the bizarre hoatzin, which has its nests around the lake. When we walk around different paths around the lake, we will always see herds of monkeys, as well as squirrel monkeys, Kapuziner monkeys, which live here in groups of up to 70 animals. The Manu Lodge offers the largest path system with over 20 km of marked paths. These paths offer an insight into the different habitats of the rain forest: Igapo, flooded forest up to the "tierra firme" forest. We spend the night in the lodge. B/L/D

Day 30: Manu Jungle exploration
There are two observation towers in the surrounding area of the Manu lodge and from here you have a wonderful view over the almost never ending number of trees and the snow-covered summits, which are close to Cusco. A visit to the towers is particularly worthwhile very early in the morning, when the rain forest awakes. This gives you the opportunity to observe primates and birds while they are looking for food. In the afternoon we do a boat trip in one of the nearby parrot- and their nesting areas. B/L/D

Day 31: Manu Lodge - Boca Manu - Flight Cusco
The boat trip to the Boca Manu flight path offers a last opportunity to discover a tapir, a capybara or a jaguar sunbathing on one of the riverbanks. B/-/-

They can only be observed from a bird's view and you will be able to see the geometrical pattern, which are primarily in the shape of animals and birds. It is even more amazing knowing, that these patterns are originally from the time between 900 BC and 600 AC.
