Chile General Information:
If you are going to travel to Chile, you will se: In the North is the most arid desert in the world; in the Centre there are Mediterranean landscapes; in the South, forests and lakes; in the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, fiords, glacier fields and stormy pampas; and in the Antarctic, eternal whiteness. Chile is the ideal country for adventure travel.
Chile extends over a length of 4.300 km and is on average not broader than 200 km. The large and thin country covers approx. 800,000 qkm and exhibits heights of 0 to over 6.890 m. The highest mountain of Chile is the Ojos del Salado, whose summit reaches 6,895 m. Chile offers some of the most varied and extreme climatic and geographic conditions on the planet.
Continental Chile extends from the tropical Arica to the sub-antarctic Punta Arenas and possesses variety of regional attractionsfor visitors: the high summits of the Andes, snow-covered volcanoes, projecting river valleys, deeply cut Canyons, the infertile desert, ice fjords, low-blue glaciers, turquis coloured seas, sand beaches and rocky foothills.
Due to the different landscape forms Chile possesses also a very interesting flora and fauna world. At the coast and in the Atacama Desert you can find sea lions, penguins, otters and pelicans. In the northern high lands however there are whole colonies of flamingos and large groups of the with extinction threatened Vicuñas. You can observe the patagonian Guanacos in the national park Torres del Paine.
In the Pacific, there's Easter Island with its many mysteries and Juan Fernandez, with a unique ecosystem and species of flora and fauna existing nowhere else in the world.
Although most Chileans are of European origin, also Indian traditions are being kept. Thus there are still settlements of Atacama, Aymara and Mapuche, which retained until today its own, delightful culture.
