Trekking and climbing tours have been a specialty of Surtrek for the past 25 years. With us, you can hike the tongue-twisting Carihuayrazo Mountain, trekking through quintessential Andean landscapes spotted with llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. For the even more adventurous, hiking the foothills of the El Altar Volcano requires a half-day drive from Quito before your gear is loaded on pack-mule and you head out on an unforgettable adventure. Then too, our week-long trekking tour through the northern Ecuadorian highlands will take you through colorful indigenous markets, past remarkable waterfalls, over spectacular mountain passes, and up and around Andean plateaus!

We at Surtrek recommend traveling to the Ecuadorian highlands during the main dry season, which extends from June through September. During these months, the days are typically bright, clear, sunny and warm all day long.
In addition, note that we often have a few warmer and drier weeks in December and early January, which fortunately coincide with Christmas and New Year’s.
October to May should be avoided, as this is the rainy season.
One step at a time, explore Ecuadorian highland trails backdropped by magnificent snow-capped volcanoes, stunning river valleys, and rapidly disappearing cloud forests. The trails themselves evidence plenty of wildlife – from condors, wild horses and Andean fox, to subline orchids and bromeliads. On these trekking adventures, make contact with remote indigenous communities, learning ancestral traditions, and experiencing new sights, sounds, flavors.
For all of this, Surtrek’s experienced, certified and professionally trained trekking guides promise you the ultimate eco-adventure hiking experience. These guides — in coordination with the in-house Operations staff at Surtrek — will skillfully handle every detail of even the most complex itinerary, allowing you to focus on enjoying your adventure.
For trips to Ecuador, we carefully choose accommodations in small distinctive hotels, character-rich colonial haciendas, and eco-lodges – depending on the area you’ll trek and your preference.

“I found Surtrek online as it proved to be an excellent, efficient company. Our 4 days in the Galapagos were expertly planned and we were never left without a guide - we were even walked to dinner each night and assisted with ordering!”
