Kapawi Eco-Lodge - 7 Nights Itinerary

Located in the Ecuadorian Amazon near the Peruvian border, the Kapawi Eco-lodge is within territory controlled by the indigenous Achuar people. In addition to all of the activities in the 4- and 5-day Amazon tours based at the Kapawi Eco-lodge, on this 8-day Amazon adventure you can go on an extended canoeing or kayaking trip and visit another indigenous community.

Kapawi Eco-Lodge: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Quito – Kapawi Eco-lodge & Reserve

AM: Guests will be picked up from their hotel in Quito beginning at 6:00 am. Departing from Quito, guests will be driven along the new “Oriental” highway, passing through the towns of Tambillo, Latacunga, Ambato, Baños, before arriving in Shell. Breakfast will be provided for every passenger. Short stops will be made during the trip for bathroom breaks and photo opportunities. Arriving in Shell, guests will be welcomed by representatives of the Achuar community and will be assisted onto small planes. During the 50-minute flight from Shell, you will pass over unbroken pristine rainforest, arriving at the airstrip of the local Achuar community. There, you will be welcomed by your Kapawi guides, who will escort you on the final leg of your journey: a scenic 30-minute canoe ride into the majesty and tranquility of the rainforest.

PM: Lunch at Kapawi Eco-lodge & Reserve. After lunch, guests will have the opportunity to relax, unpack, and situate themselves in their new surroundings. That afternoon we will have a relaxed activity in which guests can walk along one of the banks of the Pastaza River. Here, the guides will give guests an introductory orientation session with information about the rainforest and Achuar culture while enjoying a beautiful sunset. At night, after dinner, we will explore the Kapawari River in search of nocturnal animals such as monkeys, alligators and birds. All of this will be combined with the fantastically starry Kapawi sky.

Lunch - Dinner
Day 2
Birdwatching – Pink River Dolphin Exploring

AM: Early this morning, guests will have the opportunity to find and spot the great variety of birds that the southeast Ecuadorian rainforest has to offer (ones like the Hoatzin, Aninga, Speckled Chachalaca, White Eared Jacamar, Cocoi Heron, Neo-tropical Cormorant and the Great Egret). After breakfast, guests can take a walk, approximately 2 hours with stops, where they will learn about medicinal plants of the area and tropical forest ecology.

PM: Lunch at Kapawi Eco-lodge & Reserve, followed by rest time. In the afternoon, guests will be able to explore, via kayak, the Kapawari River and its connecting lagoons while observing local wildlife such as the fascinating Pink river dolphin. As the river is quite calm, swimming is completely safe.  At night after dinner, we will explore the Kapawari River in search of nocturnal animals such as monkeys, alligators and birds. All of this will be combined with the fantastically starry Kapawi sky.

Day 3
Parrot Claylick – Canoe or Kayak Trip – Night Walk

AM: Early in the morning, the guides will escort guests on a 30-minute motor boat ride to reach one of the best natural attractions: a parrot claylick. Here, guests will see different species of parrots, macaws such as the Cobalt-Winged Parakeet, Chestnut- Fronted Macaw, and Yellow Crowned Amazon. After breakfast, we will head out along the Ishpingo trail to begin a 30-minute canoe trip to the beginning of the trail. Guests are asked to be prepared to cross some log bridges. This trip is combined with a canoe or kayak trip up the Ishpingo River to observe the local wildlife along the riverbank.

PM: Lunch will be provided during the trip. Return to Kapawi for dinner. After dinner, guests can partake in a spectacular night walk, observing the many different kinds of insects and amphibians that are found around the lodge.

Day 4
Parrot Claylick – Visit to a Local Indigenous Community

AM: In the morning you can choose from a birdwatching activity or a return trip to the parrot claylick. After breakfast, guests will go on a guided walk for approximately 2 hours to learn about the benefits and uses of palms by the Achuar people, and the important ecological role played by insects and animals in the forest. Lunch at the lodge.

PM: After lunch, guests will visit one of the Achuar communities that is located close to the lodge. This is one of the most popular activities offered in Kapawi because of the significant cultural contributions of the Achuar people. Guests will have a chance to see a community and meet its members, as well as purchase traditional handicrafts. Dinner in the community provided by Kapawi. Camping overnight near the community.

Day 5
Traditional Indigenous Ceremony – Kayaking – Jungle Trek

AM: Early in the morning, guests are offered the unique experience of participating in a traditional ceremony involving the drinking of a local Achuar tea called “guayusa.” The ceremony will begin at approximately 4 am, when guests will drink the purifying tea around a campfire as an Achuar man interprets the dreams of the participants. Towards the end of the ceremony, everyone will be able to enjoy the sunrise. Breakfast at Kapawi. After breakfast, various activities will be offered, including fishing and handicraft making.

PM: After lunch, guests can take kayak and hiking trips to explore the surrounding areas. After dinner, guests, guides and local people will assemble in the hammock house to share legends, traditional greetings and more.

Day 6
Pastaza-Kusutkao Trail – Kayaking – Night Walk or Canoe Ride

AM: After breakfast, we will leave out for the Pastaza-Kusutkao Trail. Guests will arrive at the trail after a one hour motor canoe ride up the Pastaza River. Guests are asked, once again, to be prepared to cross log bridges as the trail can become quite swampy. At the end of the trail at the Kusutkao River, guests will be met with lunch provided by the Kapawi staff.

PM: After lunch, guests have the option of kayaking back down to Kapawi (approximately 3 hours). Dinner at Kapawi. That night, after dinner guests can choose from a night walk along a different trail or a canoe ride.

Day 7
Canoe Trip to the Indigenous Wayusenta Community

AM: After breakfast, we will depart for the Wayusenta community. Guests will take a beautiful two-hour canoe trip up the Kapawi River. The guides will then take guests on a 30-minute hike to a strikingly beautiful waterfall where they will then be taught about the importance the Achuar people attach to it.

PM: Lunch in the community (brought from the lodge). This visit to the Wayusenta Community will be an opportunity for guests to learn more about the Achuar way of life. Return to Kapawi for dinner.

Day 8
Blowgun Contest / Amazon face Painting – Return to Quito

AM: Early in the morning, the guides will direct guests to specific points near the lodge to observe various species of tropical birds. Breakfast and preparation for departure. In the last few hours before leaving the Achuar territory, guests can participate in a blowgun contest to demonstrate who's the best hunter among the guides and guests. Guests will also be able to learn the art of Achuar face painting and how it relates to their different activities.

PM: From there, you will fly back to Shell (box lunches will be provided) and you will continue on to Quito along the same route as your arrival.
