Sani Lodge 2-Night Itinerary

Situated in over 40,000 acres of untouched rainforest between the Cuyabeno and Yasuni national reserves, the Sani Lodge gives you direct access to an extensive diversity of exotic Amazonian plant and animal life. On this 3-day/2-night tour, you will be introduced to this amazing flora and fauna (the lodge sits on a lake, itself is home to manatees, Giant otters and Black Cayman). Likewise, you will have an opportunity to interact with and get to know the indigenous Sani people. Additional experiences on this tour include trips to the lodge’s birding tower and to a parrot “clay lick” in the Yasuni reserve.

“Everything about Surtrek was amazing. The hotels, the food, the tours. Everything exceeded our expectations. I cannot recommend Surtrek highly enough!”Serena Tyra

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Quito – Arrival in the Amazon’s Sani Lodge

Your day begins with a 35-minute flight from Quito to the town of Amazonian frontier town of Coca, where Sani staff members will pick you up and take you to a local hotel located on the banks of the Napo River. There, a bilingual guide will give you a safety and security briefing before boarding a motorboat for 2-hour trip down the Napo River, a major tributary of the Amazon River

During this journey, you will make contact with the Amazon rainforest, its ancestral communities and birds such as herons and Amazon buzzards, while enjoying a delicious refreshment. The boat ride will be followed by a 15-minute walk along a wooden platform and then a canoe ride across beautiful Challuacocha Lake to the Sani Lodge. The lodge’s staff will welcome you with a refreshing cold drink and snacks before directing you to your cabin.

In the afternoon, we will take a short walk along nearby trails or go canoeing, which both offer many opportunities to observe primates, Amazonian birds and black caimans, as well as experiencing close encounters with amazing plant life such as kapok trees, orchids and bromeliads.

Returning to the lodge, the lodge’s chef will present you with a wide-ranging menu of national and international cuisine, including meals that will meet the expectations of even vegetarians and vegans. Later, one of the lodge’s bilingual naturalist guides will give a presentation about the various aspects of the Amazon.

Day 2
Lodge’s Canopy Tower – Jungle Trail Hiking – Nighttime Cayman Watching

After breakfast, you will experience life in the upper forest canopy from the lodge’s 36-meter-high (118-feet) tower. To take you to the tower, the guides will paddle your canoe across Lake Challuacocha for about 30 minutes, which will be followed by a short 10-minute walk. In this area, more than 565 bird species have been recorded, including parrots, toucans, tanagers, catch flies, and hummingbirds. With a little luck, you might even spot howler monkeys resting in the treetops. The tower provides you a different perspective on the rainforest, opening a window into a different world of Amazonian bio-diversity that is difficult if not impossible to observe from the forest floor. The journey continues with an exploration in the Amazonian jungle in search of several of its countless creatures. We will return to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, there are several alternatives from which to choose, from birdwatching from the lodge’s bar to just relaxing in a hammock. In the afternoon, we will take a walk along the Coto or Chorongo forests trails to discover the intrinsic relationships between living creatures and the role they play in this complex ecosystem. Orchids, vines, fig trees, ancient trees and bromeliads are part of this fabulous tropical forest. Dinner at the lodge.

After dinner, we will explore the lake in search of the rare Black Cayman, an endangered species that can measure up to 6 meters long.  Return to the lodge.

Day 3
Parrot Clay Lick – Visit to the Indigenous Sani Community – Departure

After breakfast, we will head out by motorized canoe on the Napo River to visit a parrot clay lick in Yasuni National Park. There, thousands of these colorful birds assemble each day to eat clay that aids in their digestion and detoxification. Among the species that can be found there are Amazonian, yellow-shouldered, Blue-headed and coroniamarilla parrots. We will continue with a walk within Yasuni National Park, regarded by scientists as one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet. Other species found here that cannot be found in the north are Spider monkeys, Golden-mantled tamarins, and Yellow and Blue parrots. Hopefully, we will enjoy a close encounter with peccaries.

We will then visit the Sani Island Community Center to get an idea of how people live in this remote community. At the center, you can enjoy drinks, customs, food and Kichwa culture, while learning how local life is environmentally sustainable.

Lunch in the community and departure at 1:00 p.m., in time to get back to Coca and catch your return flight to Quito at 5:30 pm.
