Napo Cultural Center - 4 Nights Itinerary B

The Yasuni National Park is a uniquely diverse area that covers over 9,800 square kilometers of pristine Amazon rainforest. The park – considered a “biosphere reserve” by UNESCO – is home to more than 550 bird species, which is about 40% of the bird species of the entire Amazon Basin…think about that! For this 5-day/4-night adventure, you will get a close up view of Amazon wildlife in the Yasuni reserve, a sacred land considered one of the most diverse areas in the planet. You’ll only need to prepare yourself for discovering this amazing biodiversity that the Amazon rainforest hides in its forests and creeks. While lodging at the Yasuni Kapawi Lodge, and later the Napo Wildlife Center, you will experience the incredible adventure of paddling a small canoe or hiking on rainforest trails. At both lodges, you will experience the forest floor and its assembly of colors, sounds, scents and the beautiful and curious creatures. And don’t worry, during all of your hikes and excursions, a native and bilingual guide will always be  with your group to guide you and reveal the secrets of the jungle to you.

Napo Cultural Center: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Quito – Coca – Arrival at Yasuni Kichwa Eco-lodge – Napo River Walk

The adventure starts with a flight from Ecuador’s capital city of Quito to the Amazonia town of Coca. Your rainforest trip then begins from Coca in a comfortable roof-covered canoe operated by an outboard motor.

The downriver canoe trip takes about two hours, during which time refreshments will be provided to passengers. During the trip, you will witness exotic birds such as herons, kingfishers, sandpiper terns and other species – as well as the lush and strikingly beautiful rainforest scenery.

Arriving at Yasuni Kichwa Eco-lodge, visitors are warmly welcomed with a typical refreshing drink and a bite before being taken to their cabins in the heart of the Amazon – one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. In the afternoon, we will go on a short walk to reach the Napo River and enjoy a beautiful sunset on its banks before returning for dinner and rest.

Day 2
Kichwa Cultural Encounter – Observation Tower – Napo Wildlife Center – Cari-Añangu Trail

Getting up at 4:30 a.m., you will be introduced to one of the unique ancient customs of Kichwa culture: sampling wayusa. This drink serves to energize the body and mind as you listen to songs in the Kichwa language. During this encounter, your dreams will be interpreted, we will discuss important issues, you can ask questions, or you can meditate in this unique and peaceful environment. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for breakfast and then continue to the observation tower of the Anangu community.

You will leave your luggage at the door of your cabin so that the lodge’s staff can take your bags to our next destination: The Napo Wildlife Center.

After a short walk, we will reach the observation tower that rises 35 meters above the forest canopy, allowing you to discover the new world that opens up before your eyes. After this activity we will take a short trip to the Napo Wildlife Center, where you will receive a refreshing fruit juice. After checking in we will have a hearty Amazonian lunch.

In the afternoon, we will embark on a hiking excursion along the Cari-Añangu Trail. During this activity, the guide will explain the different characteristics of wetlands and the ecosystem of Lake Añangu. Return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the night.

Day 3
Parrot Clay Licks – Interpretation Center

We will get up early to reach one of the most accessible “clay licks” frequented by Ecuadorian Amazon parrots, just one hour from the lodge. The aim is for guests to arrive before the very beginning of this spectacular natural activity in which brilliantly colored parrots assemble by the dozens from between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to eat mineralized clay.

Afterwards, following a half-hour walk through the rainforest, we will reach another parrot clay lick that usually attracts them from 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. At this site you can see about 11 species of parrots, as well as parakeets and Scarlet macaws during certain seasons. Of course the particular sightings depend on weather conditions and a little luck – though this activity is usually fruitful.

We will have lunch at the local interpretation center. After this and a short break, you will learn about Kichwa culture, crafts, traditions and ancestral uses of natural resources directly from people of the community.

Return to the hotel in the afternoon just before dusk.
