Napo Cultural Center: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Quito – Coca – Arrival at Yasuni Kichwa Eco-lodge – Napo River Walk

The adventure starts with a flight from Ecuador’s capital city of Quito to the Amazonia town of Coca. Your rainforest trip then begins from Coca in a comfortable roof-covered canoe operated by an outboard motor.

The downriver canoe trip takes about two hours, during which time refreshments will be provided to passengers. During the trip, you will see birds such as herons, kingfishers, sandpiper terns and other species – as well as the lush and strikingly beautiful scenery.

Arriving at Yasuni Kichwa Eco-lodge, visitors are warmly welcomed with a typical refreshing drink and a bite before being taken to their cabins in the heart of the Amazon – one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. In the afternoon, we will go on a short walk to reach the banks of the Napo River and enjoy a beautiful sunset on its banks before returning for dinner and rest.

Day 2
Observation Tower – Camping Option – Evening Boat Ride on the Napo River

Following breakfast, we will go on a 2-hour walk to then climb a 35-meter-high observation tower, where you’re likely to see a variety of birds, howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and sloths. Returning to the lodge, you can choose camping as an option for learning more about life in the heart of “Pacha Mama” and the nature of the jungle. (Note: the lodge will take care of all the camping equipment)

At sunset, we will ride along the Napo River in the Ancestral Kichwa Catamaran, a boat that emulates ancient Kichwa trading vessels. During this evening cruise, you can enjoy magical stories and legends while tasting some delicious chopped roast still hot from stove. A full dinner will be served afterwards.

Day 3
Kichwa Cultural Session – Parrot Clay Licks – Kuri Muyu Interpretation Center – Blackwater Canoeing – Napo Wildlife Center

Getting up at 4:30 a.m., you will be introduced to one of the unique ancient customs of Kichwa culture: sampling wayusa. This drink serves to energize the body and mind as you listen to songs in the Kichwa language. During this encounter, your dreams will be interpreted, we will discuss important issues, you can ask questions, or you can meditate in this unique and peaceful environment. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for breakfast.

You will leave your luggage at the door of your cabin so that the lodge’s staff can take your bags to our next destination: The Napo Wildlife Center. Before heading to the center, we will go by canoe to visit three incredible “parrot licks” for spectacular sightings of about 11 species of parrots, as well as parakeets and Scarlet macaws during certain seasons. Of course the particular sightings depend on weather conditions and a little luck – though this activity is usually fruitful.

We will end this morning with a visit to the Kuri Muyu Interpretation Center, which is managed by the women of the community there. You will learn more about Kichwa culture, handicrafts, traditions and ancestral uses of natural resources.

After lunch, we will paddle by canoe through a narrow Amazonian blackwater river that reaches the lagoon and the Napo Wildlife Reserve, itself the best introduction to the tropical rainforest. En route, you will have excellent opportunities to see monkeys, toucans and macaws, while the dense vegetation of the shore will invite you to imagine a primeval enchanted world. Also before reaching the Napo Center, you will have an amazing encounter with the calm waters of Lake Añangucocha and a spectacular view of the lodge. Arriving at the dock, visitors are warmly welcomed with a refreshing drink, and are then guided to the comforts of their cabins.

Day 4
Observation Tower – Primary Forest Exploring – Lake Area Walk

After breakfast, we will head out at dawn from the lodge to a 36-meter-high observation tower. Rising above the forest canopy, this tourist attraction is located near the Napo River and is only 20 minutes from the lodge. The tower was opened to visitors in November 2004 to allow them to personally experience life in the treetops. The galvanized metal tower was built with the highest standards of quality and safety and is personally inspected by its builders. While climbing the 12 floors of the tower, you will have an opportunity to observe the profile of the forest and its different levels. Once at the top, you can cross a wooden platform built by specialists at the top of a stunning Ceibo tree, from where you have the opportunity to enjoy the scenery. You can see flocks of colorful tanagers, macaws and toucans, in addition to monkeys and other tree species that are active in the early morning and before sunset. Species of birds that are impossible to observe from below are easily admired from above. At the lodge itself is a second observation tower attached to the dining room, from where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake.

In the afternoon, we will visit the dry-land primary forest to discover its interior and increase your chances of observing lizards, colorful birds and even chichico monkeys. After the walk, you will also have a chance to explore the lake and its small surrounding creeks in search of Giant otters, which are occasionally observed in this fascinating area.

We will return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon you will go on a paddle-canoe trip to explore deeper areas in the channels of Lake Añangucocha and see the unique species in the area. After dinner, a video on the local community and the Napo Wildlife Center will be shown.
