Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Journeys into the Ancient Past (The Colorados Trail)

The Colorados Trail: On this excursion, we will travel back in time as we ride and walk along one of the most important ancient thoroughfares used by local shepherds thousands of years ago. From there, we will pass through the daunting tunnel formerly used to connect the village of San Pedro to the city of Calama.  We will also trek along the cliffs of the Cordillera de la Sal, which is the perfect place for observing the scenic Catarpe Valley, the oasis of San Pedro, the Salar de Atacama, the Andes, the Cordillera de Domeyko, and even Alto Atacama itself! Finally, our hike will take us along a path on top of the high dunes – a well-known feature of Mars Valley.  (This half-day excursion is considered to be of medium difficulty, as it consists of a 6.3 km [3.91 mi] walk and a 3 km [1.86 mi] van ride, though it requires no acclimatization.)

Day 2
Spectacularly Scenic Treks (Discovering Moon Valley) / Spectacularly Scenic Treks (Atacama Salt Flat and Toconao Village)

Discovering Moon Valley: Enter a sanctuary of nature and geology as we explore the spectacular geological formation known as “Moon Valley.” Created through the conflicting pressures of the Andes and the Cordillera de Domeyko mountains, this area provides one of the most breathtaking and iconic views of the entire region. Indeed, travelers from all over the world journey here to enjoy the sun setting over the valley, which you too can savor along with an aperitif (included). (This half-day excursion is considered easy, as it consists of a 25 km [15.53 mi] van ride and requires no acclimatization.)

Atacama Salt Flat and Toconao Village: This varied tour starts with a visit to the local village of Toconao, known for its masonry and architecture, not to mention its important agricultural heritage. From there, we will continue on to the Tamarug Forest before reaching the Los Flamencos National Reserve, one of the most iconic and memorable spots for enjoying celebrated Atacama Desert sunsets – though your outing also includes an aperitif. (This half-day excursion is considered easy, as it consists of a 64 km [39.76 mi] van ride, and requires no acclimatization.)

Day 3
Wet and Wild Water Tours (Andean Lagoons, Aguas Calientes and Tuyajto)

Andean Lagoons, Aguas Calientes and Tuyajto: This extensive excursion will take you through the southwest region of the San Pedro, initially voyaging into the Tropic of Capricorn latitude where ancient Ecuadorian and Chilean Empires once met during the epoch of the Inca. The outing continues to the village of Socaire, known for its traditional church and terraced plantations of quinoa and purple potatoes. After lunch, we will visit the high Andean lakes of Miscanti and Miñiques. Formed as a result of ancient ice thaws, these crystal-clear waters provide the perfect setting for observing the immensity of the surrounding mountains. The region is also a showpiece for the unique flora and fauna adapted to these high altitude conditions. The journey continues to Aguas Calientes and Tuyajto, near the border with Argentina. At a height of 4,000 meters above sea level, you can also explore other crystalline lagoons that beautifully reflect the contrasting colors of the surrounding mountain landscape.  (This full-day excursion is considered to be of medium difficulty, as it consists of a 140 km [86.99 mi] van ride and requires two days of acclimatization.)

After lunch, we will visit the Salar de Pujsa salt flat, which is the migration point for nesting flamingos to lay their eggs. Finally, we will visit the immense rock formations known as the “Pecan Monks,” noted for their sheer size and their abrupt emergence from the desert floor. (This full-day excursion is considered to be of medium difficulty, as it consists of a 115 km [71.45 mi] van ride to an altitude of 4,500 m, and therefore requires two days of acclimatization.)
