Awasi Atacama Hotel - 4 Nights Itinerary

Thumbnail Description: On this 5-Day/4-Night tour, Awasi Atacama Lodge provides a series of “outings” that will allow you to enjoy the magic of the Atacama geography, the silence of its landscape and the warmth of its people. You will experience northern Chile's Atacama Desert – the driest, most desolate and most arid in the world. In this area, geological transformations have given birth to imposing volcanoes, salt flats and lagoons, while bodies of water emerge in the middle of the desert along with thermal pools, geysers and marshes. Hotel Awasi is situated in this privileged location, just a stone’s throw from the center of town – San Pedro de Atacama – where you're invited to visit the church, the museum, the fair, the picturesque local stores and get to know the people. Eight cabanas with pointed thatched roofs mimic the historic neighboring village. Meals served on the patio introduce surprising local flavors, while your private guide is ready to take you off-road to places tourists have yet to discover.  At the Awasi Atacama Lodge, you can choose between full-day excursions (with lunch included) or two half-day excursions (returning for lunch at Awasi between the two excursions). These types of outings include the following:

4x4 dessert excursions (full day & half day) Hikes (full day & half day) Mountain biking trails Horseback rides Other desert excursions, birdwatching, astronomic tours, and more

Each couple can program their outings according to their own rhythm and particular interests, and will be accompanied by an experienced guide willing to share their knowledge of the place and their own experiences.

Awasi Atacama Hotel: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in San Pedro de Atacama – Atacama History Tour

AM: Arriving at the airport in the northern Chilean city of Calama, your guide will meet you there and drive you to the Awasi Lodge (this trip takes approximately 90 minutes). After checking in, you will have lunch there at the hotel and have time to rest up.

PM: After dining and a chance to relax, you will head out on a fascinating trip back in time. Leaving Awasi, you and your personal driver will drive to Quitor Pukara, an Atacama fortress that dates back to 1000 AD. Located in the Ayllu de Quitor, about two miles from San Pedro, we will climb the ruins, and from its highpoint take in the view of the Andes, San Pedro River and the agricultural fields stretching across the region. We will then continue on to the town of Tulor, which is situated about six miles from San Pedro and was one of the first and most important Atacamenian settlements, dating back to 800 BC. Once there, we will visit the ruin’s excavation site and original homes that have been reconstructed according to the standards of archaeologists. To conclude the excursion, you have the option of visiting the Father LePaige Archeological Museum, where Atacamenian history is presented in rich detail. This will allow you to immerse yourself in Atacamenian history and culture, as well as understand why San Pedro is Chile’s archaeological capital. You will then be driven back to the lodge to relax and have dinner.

Day 2
Death Valley Horseback Riding – Moon Valley Excursion

AM: Setting out on horseback from Awasi, heading in the direction of the Quitor Oasis, this morning we will ride along a narrow dirt road to Death Valley. This ride is back-dropped with huge clay formations and large dunes, which makes riding through this terrain both surreal and exciting. After leaving the mountains, we follow a path back to Awasi.

PM: Following lunch as the Awasi Lodge, you and your personal guide will drive west to the Salt Range, where we will find Moon Valley, located some 15 minutes away. Its name speaks of the landscape’s magic you will visit. As the tour progresses, you will stop at various lookouts and observe the geological formations which – combined with the actions of the wind and water – have created a geographical relief reminiscent of the inhospitable beauty of the lunar surface. In the morning, you can relish the silence and solitude of this magnificent landscape. Later that evening, enjoy the sunset as it subtly changes colors over the mountains.

Day 3
Machuca – Rio Grande (Full-day hike)

AM: Following your daily breakfast “dining experience,” at around 8:30 a.m. you and your personal guide will go out on a hike that follows an old shepherd’s trail. Heading north from the lodge, after a 50-minute drive, you will reach the town of Machuca to begin your hike. You will start walking through green wetlands where families of llamas graze and that are the homes to various species of ducks and birds. You will continue your trek until reaching a place called Peñaliri, where you will find a couple of abandoned stone houses that will serve as an ideal restaurant for your picnic.

PM: After lunch, you will start a moderately challenging climb with the river below and at your feet a welcoming landscape of colorful mountains, immense ravines and the town of Rio Grande. Walking down to the town, you will pass fields of alfalfa, garlic crops and herds of llamas, sheep and lambs. We conclude our hike in the Rio Grande Church, where a car will be waiting to take you back to the hotel by 5:00, when you will be able to rest up after this marvelous and intense adventure.

Tara Salt Flat Tour (Full-day Drive)

AM/PM: Leaving the lodge at 9:30 a.m., we will drive up to the Bolivian border to reach the Licancabur and the Juriques volcanos, the two impressive mountains that appear unreachable when seen from San Pedro. We will continue on to the Chilean Altiplano, passing the fertile low lands of Quepiaco River, where you can see vicuñas, flamingoes and wild ducks. Later, we will reach the incredible Pakana Monk rock formations – true wonders of nature. We get off the paved road and follow a trail that leads us to the Tara Salt Flat. Here, you can enjoy your lunch with a spectacular view of Lake Tara and the enormous rock cliffs and mountains that surround it.

Day 5
Mountain Biking to Cejar Lake – Departure

AM: This morning we will leave the lodge for close to a two-hour early morning mountain biking experience. Heading south along a flat route, you will travel on a paved or compacted road for the first 3.7 miles, and then ride on a dirt road for 7-1/2 miles. This scenic route provides a 360˚ view of the Atacama Salt Flat basin’s three surrounding mountain ranges: The Andes, Domeyko and Salt Ranges. After biking 11.2 miles. Finally, you will reach the three turquoise Cejar Lakes, one of which you can float in due to the high concentration of salt in the water. Here, you can cool off from the heat and rest up after the ride. From there, you can choose to return to the lodge by bike or by car.

PM: Following lunch at the lodge, you will conclude this amazing experience in the Atacama Lodge.
