Torres Patagonia Lodge - 4 Nights Itinerary

Thumbnail Description: Strategically situated at the foot of the majestic Torres del Paine mountain range, and close to the park’s legendary hiking trails, Las Torres Patagonia Lodge serves as the perfect activity base for exploring the area’s host of natural wonders. Whether you crave to witness the drama of a calving glacier or take a long horseback ride across the pampas, the Las Torres Patagonia Lodge provides both full-day and half-day excursions that will fulfill your need for adventure in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. In fact, each traveler, couple or group can select their own excursions according to their own rhythm and particular interests. For example, this 5-day/4-night excursion is designed for enjoying a range of themes within the national park – from the park’s fauna, wildlife and geology, to the culture of the region’s indigenous people and gauchos. The lodge’s full- and half-day excursions include various modes of transportation, including hiking, horseback riding, 4x4 safaris and boat trips. Last but not least, these excursions vary from easy to difficult – depending on your fitness and expertise. On all excursions you will be accompanied by an experienced guide or baqueano (gaucho), who will share their knowledge of the Patagonia and bring vivid color to those “little things” that are generally overlooked.

Day 2
Lenga Forest Hiking – Horseback Riding with the Gauchos of Patagonia

AM: For those people interested in learning more about Patagonia's famous Lenga forests, this morning’s Lenga Forest excursion can be a hike along part of the park’s “Circuit Trail,” around the eastern edge of the massif. This will take you to the final destination: An old-growth Lenga forest that provides a habitat for many animals. During this excursion there’s a good chance to spot Magellanic woodpeckers, Austral parakeets, Chilean flickers and other forest small birds. Also keep an eye out for pumas (the so-called “Andean Lion”), which roam this forest. In addition, the trail features great views of Laguna Azul Lake and Cerro Paine, on the eastern side of the massif.

PM: This afternoon you will learn the ways of the Patagonian cowhand by spending time with baqueanos (gauchos), who lead the Las Torres Lodge horseback treks. During your time with these local range riders — the descendants of real-life ranches hands — you will learn about their special clothing, their saddles and other horse tack, as well as get a chance to share mate (an herbal tea made from yerba mate leaves). These baqueanos will also demonstrate how to properly saddle and shoe a horse, and of course how to ride. By the end of this cowhand adventure, you'll have a clear understanding of what it was like to live and work in this remote corner of South America in days past.

Los Cuernos Hike

AM: Today, you can get up close and personal with the famous “Horns” of Torres del Paine. As we make our way to the Refugio Cuernos, this hike will take you along the edge of the Paine Massif following the relatively flat section of the park’s "W Trail.” Located just below a cluster of jagged peaks called Los Cuernos ("the Horns"), the destination offers incredible views across Lake Nordenskjöld.

PM: After enjoying your box lunch, there will be plenty of time to linger by the lakeside and poke a finger or toe in the frigid water before returning along the 11 km (6 mile) trail to Las Torres Patagonia Lodge.

AM/PM: This morning we will head out on the “Full Paine Excursion, which truly lives up to its name by giving travelers the fullest introduction to Torres del Paine National Park in the shortest amount of time. A road trip will take you into the heart of the park, where you can enjoy scenic overlooks, short hikes and an exhilarating lake cruise to the Grey Glacier. Along the way, we will make stops at Puente Negro, the Nordenskjöld Lookout, the Sarmiento Lookout, Lake Pehoé and the Salto Grande waterfall.

PM: After enjoying an open-air gourmet lunch, you have a choice of hiking along the southern shore of Grey Lake to a point where you can gaze down at icebergs, or taking a catamaran trip* across the length of the lake to the imposing Grey Glacier. Day 5
Blue Lagoon Hike – Departure

AM: This afternoon, you can choose to go on a half-day excursion to the Blue Lagoon: the best option for those who want to observe and photograph the Torres towers without all the walking. The adventure starts with a 30-minute drive through the rugged terrain of the national's park's far eastern region Laguna Amarga, where you can observe cianobacteria with stromatolites, and sometimes flamingos, before continuing the journey to the Blue Lagoon. After parking, we will head out on a short half-hour walk that blends wildlife sightings and views of the Paine Massif. Animals are abundant in this part of the park, especially guanaco and birds such as condors, raptors and water birds. During this 4-hour excursion, we can also visit the spectacular Paine Waterfall, the first of three waterfalls of Paine River.

PM: After returning to the lodge for lunch, you will be driven back to Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales or Calafate (Argentina) on a scenic full-or half-day road trip. As you head to the airport for your departing flight home or onward, enjoy your last look back at the spectacular Torres del Paine Park and Patagonia, a unique region of inspiring natural wonders.
