Torres Patagonia Lodge 3-Night Itinerary

The Las Torres Patagonia Lodge provides both full-day and half-day excursions that will fulfill your need for adventure in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. In fact, each traveler, couple or group can select their own excursions according to their own rhythm and particular interests. For example, this 4-day/5-night excursion is designed for enjoying a range of themes within the national park – from the park’s fauna, wildlife and geology, to the culture of the region’s gauchos and its ancient indigenous people. Whether you crave to witness the drama of a calving glacier or take a long horseback ride across the pampas, the lodge’s full- and half-day excursions include various modes of transportation, including hiking, horseback riding, 4x4 safaris and boat trips. Last but not least, these excursions vary from easy to difficult – depending on your fitness and expertise. On all excursions, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide or a baqueano (gaucho), who will share their knowledge of Patagonia and bring vivid color to those “little things” that are generally overlooked.

“The trip was excellent from beginning to end. The Isabella II was a fine ship and the crew and guides were all of the highest quality. I would recommend them to others. For us, the ship was the perfect size – not too small and not too large.”Walter Squire

Day 2
Patagon – Horseback Riding around Lake Nordenskjöld

AM: On this morning’s hike in the park, the ancient Aónikenk people of Patagonia and the park's iconic animal species are the main attractions. The excursion begins with a 25-minute drive near the Laguna Amarga ranger station. From there, the trail leads through an area dubbed the "puma restaurant" because these big cats make so many kills there. Though your chances of seeing them in the daytime are fairly slim, the skeletons of their many guanaco preys are evident along the trail. Along both sides of the trail, you are likely to observe herds of guanaco grazing, and there's also a chance to get a glimpse of foxes, condors and flightless rheas. About halfway along the trail, we will discover a large rock formation where the ancient Aónikenk people have left pictographs (rock paintings). This lofty rock formation also serves as a deck for gazing out at the mountains and the surrounding terrain. After crossing through a marshy area, the trail continues to the pick-up point at Sarmiento Lake ranger station. A 40-minute drive when then take us back to the lodge.

PM: Following lunch, we will head out across the Paine Massif on horseback to a celebrated site: Lake Nordenskjöld. This body of water was named after Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928), a Finnish-Swedish explorer who traveled much of the Antarctic, Greenland, Chile and Peru in the early 20th century. Starting out from the lodge, the excursion follows part of the famous “W Trail” that extends from the lake's gorgeous north shore to Monte Almirante Nieto, the glacier and snow-covered mountain that anchors the southeastern extreme of the Paine Massif. We will ride across numerous stream and river crossings, as well as learn about Patagonian flora, fauna, gauchos and horses as you hone your own skills in the saddle.

Day 3
Bader Valley

AM/PM: For the whole day, we will explore a rarely visited corner of the Las Torres Park on this combined horseback and hiking excursion. Setting out from the lodge on horseback, we will ride for 9 km (5 miles) along the famed “W Trail” before reaching the junction of a small side path that veers off to the right. At this point, we will leave the horses behind to head off for a steep climb down into the remote Bader Valley. Along the way, the trail passes through forest and a mountain climbing base camp before rising into a rocky area beside a stream, where we pause and contemplate the scenery. Tucked away between Mount Almirante Nieto and Los Cuernos, the valley offers an incredibly close-up glimpse of the granite faces, as well as an amazing view across Nordenskjöld, Pehoé and Sarmiento lakes to the Patagonian pampas.

Day 4
Blue Lagoon Hike – Departure

AM: This morning, you can choose to go on a half-day excursion to the Blue Lagoon: the best option for those who want to observe and photograph the Torres towers without all the walking. The adventure starts with a 30-minute drive through the rugged terrain of the national park's far eastern region Laguna Amarga, where you can observe cyanobacteria with stromatolites, and sometimes flamingos, before continuing the journey to the Blue Lagoon. After parking, we will head out on a short half-hour walk that blends wildlife sightings and views of the Paine Massif. Animals are abundant in this part of the park, especially guanaco and birds such as condors, raptors and water birds. During this 4-hour excursion, we can also visit the spectacular Paine Waterfall, the first of three waterfalls of Paine River.

PM: After returning to the lodge for lunch, you will be driven back to Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales or Calafate (Argentina) on a scenic full-or half-day road trip. As you head to the airport for your departing flight home or onward, enjoy your last look back at the spectacular Torres del Paine Park and Patagonia, a unique region of inspiring natural wonders.
