UNVEILING THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF QUITO

Just by learning how Quito got its nickname — “The Beacon of the Americas”— we can appreciate its significant history and understand its impact on modern Latin America. (By the way, if you’re curious about the origin of this name, you can ask your guide about it while sipping a specialty coffee freshly brewed in the monastery in which the nation’s declaration of independence was signed). In any case, this city is perfectly suited to serve as the capital of Ecuador, as it’s richly diverse, like the country itself, and an embodiment of the country’s history and heritage.

For activities while staying in Quito, what about considering some of these ideas: How about mountain biking down the side of a volcano, taking a helicopter tour that carries you over sacred mountains, going on a city tour of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site; visiting a butterfly museum, colonial churches, cathedrals, or a chocolate factory; straddling the equatorial line at the "Middle of the World" museum, or visiting the Insect Museum?

Or, what about an experience that brings you in closer touch with the locals? For this, you can wander through the colorful central market early in the morning, make your own ceviche and share it with your neighbors, stroll through the “best preserved historic district in the Americas” and have lunch at a traditional hueca restaurant. In the evening, you can get to know Quitenos by sharing micro-brewed beers infused with local endemic ingredients – some of them quite nice, like guayusa.

Fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. You can also visit an Ecuadorian rose farm, sample local wine and cheese, stay at a luxury hacienda, go horseback riding in the Andes or visit an indigenous-run animal market…

Speaking of haciendas, you’ll find an array of them in areas just outside of the city. One of these can boast three centuries of history, another is built on authentic Inca ruins, and yet another one is organized by the local indigenous community (here, you can actually experience their way of life), while one hacienda sits right on the shoulder of a volcano – where the view is simply priceless…

Though the reason for your visit to this fascinating country is most likely its enchanting Galapagos Islands or perhaps the vast and dense Ecuadorian Amazon, don’t overlook the many other intriguing sites while you’re here. Quito and its surrounding areas are destinations in themselves … “experiences” waiting to be discovered.

Whatever your choice of activities, Quito-based Surtrek has inside access to the best places in the capital city. We’ll be happy — very happy, to be exact — to share any of them with you. Just contact us and let us work out the details for the perfect, tailor-made excursion designed specifically for you!
