Cotopaxi Volcano Tour

Despite its pint-size footprint, Ecuador has great appeal for amateur and professional mountain climbers alike. Possessing no less than 45 volcanoes – including the mainland summits of Tungurahua, Sangay, Cayambe, Guagua Pichincha, Reventador, Cotopaxi and Potrerillos-Chancana, as well as at least 16 volcanoes in the country’s Galapagos Islands – volcano climbing is one of the major attractions to this small South American country.

Within this range of climbing options, one volcano that stands out for its majesty, its impressive landscapes and its history: Cotopaxi. A symbol of Ecuador, Cotopaxi is the second largest volcano in the country and the largest active volcano on the planet – reaching an altitude of 5,897 meters (3.66 miles) above sea level.

This one-day Cotopaxi Tour, which we offer from the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, allows you to witness this colossus, which is covered by layers of snow and ice, and is known for its perfectly symmetrical cone. This imposing giant is often the backdrop for the landscapes of the central highlands and possesses a history of dramatic eruptions, which are reasons why many people visit this mountain. However, its beauty and the physical and technical challenge that it represents for mountaineers is what makes it special among those who engage in this sport.

The volcano, which has recorded several eruptions in its history and is now moderately active, is situated within Cotopaxi National Park, located on the beautiful plateau of the Ecuadorian highlands. Here, you can find wild horses grazing on vast plains at the foot of the volcano or gathering to drink the calm waters of Lake Limpiopungo. Enjoy this incredible view and experience the intense and unique feelings that inevitably evoke contemplation of this mountain landscape. If you love the mountains, this tour will be an ideal introduction to one of the world’s challenging volcanoes.

Testimonials

“The trip was excellent from beginning to end. The Isabella II was a fine ship and the crew and guides were all of the highest quality. I would recommend them to others. For us, the ship was the perfect size – not too small and not too large.”Walter Squire
