Easter Island Mysteries and Pleasures

Surrounded by the clearest, deepest waters on the planet, remote Easter Island (or “Rapa Nui”) was the cradle of a unique and enigmatic culture whose remnants continue to exist today. Still shrouded in mystery, the island’s very existence remains difficult to grasp. Its main attractions are, of course, the more than 900 giant, mesmerizing moai statues that are scattered around the island, some standing proudly against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean while others buried up to their necks in soil.

Today, Easter Island itself is part of Chile. Though the influences of the mainland are strong, on your trip here you’ll discover that the island’s people constantly strive to retain and pass down their cultural heritage through dance, visual arts and music. And what’s most beautiful is how eager they are to share this with the world.

This is part of what our Surtrek travel designers have learned after having thoroughly explored this island. From our own experiences, we are set to tailor a unique tour of the Easter Island for you, one specifically suited to your particular interests.

Why don’t we start by asking how to travel to Easter Island? At 3,700 km (2,300 miles) off the South American coast, it’s one of the most remote places on earth. Fortunately for all of us, there are flights that routinely depart from Santiago de Chile.

So, let’s move on to the hotels in Rapa Nui. Despite limitations for importing goods, you’ll find the same comforts and amenities found in the major hotels on the mainland. Seafood, though, is a different story, as the inhabitants fish for these delicacies locally. As a matter of fact, you can try fishing for yourself! While sailing, you might reel in a mahi-mahi or a Yellowfin tuna if you’re lucky. Moreover, many of the sea urchins here are true delicacies. But if you’re not into raw food, just take them to your chef (we’ll arrange that for you) so these can be prepared for you. We’ll have a grill set up for you on the beach, complete with some island music in the background. (Now that is what should be included on any luxury tour to Easter Island).

While on the island, you can do even more than check out the astounding Moai. Adventure excursions and activities include biking, trekking, sailing and other water sports. So why not dive on in for some snorkeling? It might be a little cold (and perhaps a bit scary) but the Moais found underwater add an even more mystery to the whole experience. By the way, we can also arrange scuba diving excursions – definitely a memorable experience.

What’s more, these adventure activities can be combined with cultural excursions. Depending on the season of your visit, you can participate in cultural events such as the Tangata Manu, although it’s more of a ritualistic competition. But who knows? You might become the island’s next Birdman. Such events and experiences involving the local inhabitants are among Surtrek’s favorites.

For all this, Surtrek can custom-design a tour of Easter Island perfectly suited to you – a travel experience that’s authentic, enriching and thrilling. Experience this mind-boggling conundrum for yourself, while pampered with all the comforts and pleasures that this remote Polynesian paradise has to offer.
