Galapagos Safari Camp - 5 Nights Itinerary

Thumbnail Description: A perfect place for a relaxing family vacation, Galapagos Safari Camp consists of luxury tents and a Zen-like ambiance tucked away in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. This 6-Day/5-Night “Family Safari” itinerary provides diverse activities and educational experiences for parents and children alike. You will be led on daily land excursions by the camp’s knowledgeable guides, many of whom have their own families and are therefore well aware of the need for flexibility, patience and downtime. This itinerary is operated as a private safari, which means there’s plenty of flexibility on most excursions. For those families that prefer lodging that’s more private and group cohesive, they have the option of the camp’s three-bedroom family suite; while families that are more adventurous or have older children might prefer to stay in tented accommodations. In addition, during school vacation periods, children can participate in the camp’s “Kid’s Club” for a series of creative activities after a day of exploration and discovery.

Galapagos Safari Camp: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in the Galapagos Islands – Santa Cruz Island – Galapagos Safari Camp – Grounds Exploring – Lava Tunnels Tour – Giant Tortoise Observing

AM: Upon your arrival in the Galapagos Islands, your family’s naturalist guide will welcome you at Baltra Airport. You will then be accompanied in crossing the narrow Itabaca Channel over to Santa Cruz Island, and from there be driven to Galapagos Safari Camp. As you unpack and settle in, your guide will give your children an overview of the exotic wildlife they will soon encounter.

PM: After lunch, you will be able to go off exploring the camp’s 135 acres of grounds, where you and your family will have a chance to pick local tropical fruit, harvest cacao and spot local birds. Before sundown, we will visit the nearby lava tunnels and search for Galapagos giant tortoises roaming in the national tortoise reserve that is next to Safari Camp.

Day 2
Organic Coffee Farm Visit – Cerro Mesa Crater – Wetlands – Mountain Biking – Garrapatero Beach – Children’s Art Class

AM: Following breakfast, we will visit a neighboring organic coffee plantation to learn about responsible small-scale farming in the Galapagos Islands. If the season allows, your children will have a chance to pick coffee beans before we drive to the enormous Cerro Mesa crater for a short walk in the wetlands, which is home to a wonderful variety of birds and the occasional bathing tortoise.

PM: After lunch at a local restaurant, you and your family can go on a downhill mountain bike ride to Garrapatero Beach, where the contrast of lush green mangroves, black lava, white sand and turquoise water – along with the pink flamingos and other brilliant birdlife – is magnificent. You will also be able to go kayaking in the bay, where you will find multi-colored marine iguanas, Blue-footed boobies and countless shorebirds. Back at the Safari Camp that evening, parents can relax while their children take a private art class with a local artist.

Day 3
Full-Day of Wildlife-Watching & Snorkeling on an Uninhabited Island

AM: After breakfast, you can spend the day wildlife watching and snorkeling on one of the archipelago’s uninhabited islands that is easily accessed by a day-yacht from Santa Cruz Island (the specific island depends on your travel dates, but options include North Seymour, South Plazas, Santa Fe, and Bartolomé islands). Whatever island you visit, it will be rich in wildlife and offer wonderful opportunities for some amazing snorkeling. [Note that this is a shared boat excursion, unless requested otherwise.]

Day 4
Fishing with Local Fishermen – Snorkeling & Other Beach Activities

AM/PM: Today’s Safari Camp excursion is both a wildlife experience and a cultural exchange opportunity. Always a favorite among children, this activity involves visits by local fishermen. With your guide acting as translator, the fishermen share anecdotes from a lifetime at sea, and children can learn local fishing tricks. After fishing, you’ll land on a deserted beach and can snorkel in a spot known only to locals. If you prefer to limit the fishing and spend more time snorkeling or on the beach, your guide can adapt the day to your preference.

Day 5
Charles Darwin Research Station – Tortuga Bay OR Snorkeling

AM: This morning we will head to one of the most visited spots in the islands. Located on Santa Cruz Island, the Charles Darwin Research Station is primarily an international scientific research station situated on the outskirts of Puerto Ayora. You will be taken to its visitor center to learn about the geology, climate, natural history and the conservation of the Galapagos Islands. However, the highlight of your visit here will undoubtedly be the research facility’s Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center, which breeds giant tortoises. These enormous and slow-moving reptiles can live up to 150- 200 years and weigh between 250 and 300 kg. Approaching them in their humid and forested spaces is always an inspiring adventure. The children will have an up-close experience with the tortoises that are the islands’ namesake. Later, parents can also enjoy free time to wander around Puerto Ayora while your guide takes the children to a local playground or on a tour of the local fish market on the waterfront.

PM: After lunch, take a speedboat to Tortuga Bay, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Galapagos. In the afternoon you might spot some local surfers trying to catch the best wave (while popular with locals, this beach is not a scheduled stop). It is also common to sea lions, sea turtles, pelicans, Whitetip reef sharks and marine iguanas in these waters. Alternatively, you can join a snorkeling boat that will take you out to frolic with sea lions.
