Exploring and Diving the Humboldt Current and its Life

While it’s true that the Humboldt Explorer is among the oldest Galapagos diving cruises, it was recently refurbished and continually updates its safety features. Despite its “age,” by just going through its reviews, you can clearly see that it remains one of the most popular choices for Galapagos liveaboard diving. This is because the Humboldt Explorer possesses all the amenities, services, equipment and itineraries (especially its itineraries) required to ensure a memorable experience.

Let’s start with its facilities and equipment. The Humboldt can accommodate 16 passengers in eight (8) comfortable cabins (all with air conditioning and private bathrooms), with the ship having a wide range of facilities to meet its guests’ requirements. Most of these rooms have twin bunks that convert to larger beds for couples, while all cabins are equipped with TV/DVD, hot water, private bathrooms, showers and, of course, amazing island views. The ship itself features air-conditioned social areas, a shaded rear deck and a sundeck. Even though you will be spending a bulk of your day underwater, you’ll appreciate the warm and relaxing Jacuzzi. The ship provides tanks, weights, air compressors and rental equipment, two rigid hull inflatables used for passenger transportation and diver pickup. The yacht also uses an underwater tracking device (a nice feature), two life rafts, life rings, life vests, flares, oxygen, and first-aid equipment that ensures passenger safety.

Moving on to services, the yacht only employs the most talented divers and personnel. Each cruise has seven (7) crewmembers, including an experienced dive instructor and diver’s assistant. In this manner, the Humboldt Explorer provides the perfect balance between premium service and true scuba adventure, thereby maximizing your Galapagos diving experience.

Finally, the itinerary… The ship’s diving program focuses on the Galapagos’ highlights. To start with, you will be diving off the Darwin and Wolf Islands for four days! You then have Cousin’s Rock, Isla Lobos, Punta Carrion, and North Seymour. This itinerary becomes even more thrilling during the “cold season” or the “whale shark season,” as this is when the Humboldt Current flows through the archipelago (perhaps this is the very reason the ship got its name). In addition to these one-of-a-kind diving adventures, travelers can also enjoy the islands’ rich wildlife and unique species through the yacht’s land excursions.

All these are reasons we have placed the Humboldt Explorer on our short list of Galapagos liveaboard cruises. While not as “fancy” as some others, the Humboldt Explorer is like a veteran diver who knows where and how to approach the archipelago given your interests and abilities. After all, its long service and great reviews speak volumes. If you would like more information about this ship, contact us! Let’s talk and plan how we can make your voyage a thoroughly exceptional one!
