Cerro Blanco Protected Forest & Manglares de Puerto Hondo

Delve into the wildlife-rich Cerro Blanco, a pristine dry forest just 10 miles from Guayaquil with a landscape dominated by towering ceiba and pigio trees that shelter an array of birds. The area is one of the top places to go bird-watching in Ecuador, thanks to 211 bird species, 22 of which are endemic, including the emblematic Green Macaw which symbolizes the conservation initiatives of the region. As well as the huge variety of birds that thrive here, you’ll have the chance to see mammals like the Jaguar, Ocelot, Howler Money, Kinkajou and many more in their natural habitat with the help of an expert guide, before rounding things off with a visit to the rescue center and organic farm.

Then the nature experience continues at Puerto Hondo, home to a protected mangrove reserve and an environmental interpretation center. Here you can explore this intriguing ecosystem on a canoe ride along the waters, keeping an eye out for Saltwater Crocodiles, Pelicans, Herons and Frigate birds, just a few of the creatures that dwell in this mangrove environment. After a full day out immersed in the natural wonders surrounding Guayaquil, it’s back to the city.

“We loved the Galapagos Islands. Both of our hotels on Santa Cruz and Isabella islands were excellent. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and directed us to the most interesting sights and wildlife. Thanks Surtrek for organizing an excellent trip.”Catherine Anne Woodruff
