Horseback Riding in the Ecuadorian Highlands

Get off the beaten track with a wind-in-your-hair horseback riding experience in the Ecuadorian highlands, witnessing some of the region’s most sublime scenery. At the La Escondida Farm, Surtrek offer offers three week-long riding tours (the El Camino Tour, the South Andes Tour and the Central Andes Horseback Riding Tour), which each taking you through many of the country’s most beautiful and biologically diverse areas. Mounted on horseback, your journey will take you into pristine highland valleys surrounded by imposing summits.

If you can imagine yourself riding the range in Ecuador’s own “big sky country,” then contact one of our South America travel experts to begin planning your perfect horseback riding adventure.

Best Time to experience an Ecuadorian horseback riding tour

For riding the Ecuadorian range, we at Surtrek recommend the June-September dry season, as this best time for this activity. During these months, the days are typically dry, bright, clear and sunny all day long.  Note, though, that there are often a few warmer and drier weeks in December and early January, which fortunately coincide with Christmas and New Year’s.

October to May should be avoided, as this is the rainy season.

What you’ll experience on a Trekking Vacation in Ecuador

After being met at the Quito airport by a Surtrek representative, you will be privately driven to your initial riding lodge or small hotel.

Later, you will meet the horses and set out along the trail. The terrain is undulating though scenic, as arid rocky passes lead into more verdant plains and patches of native forest. The rides are leisurely, making the most of all viewpoints and opportunities to enjoy panoramic vistas of the valley below, trusting the horses to make the delicate climb along the loose pathways, of which they are more than capable of doing.

Having toured the surrounding and absorbed the mountainous majesty, you will gradually make your way to the next lodge along the route, where each evening you’ll enjoy a hearty Andean meal and a good night’s sleep …invigorated by the fresh mountain air during the ride.

Getting to Ecuador

Arriving at Quito’s new Mariscal Sucre International Airport, you will be met by a Surtrek representative and driven to your colonial hacienda or riding lodge – depending on your preferences and where you’ll be riding.

When heading out to ride the Ecuadorian range, you’ll be continually accompanied by an experienced Surtrek riding guide and privately driven to and from your respective haciendas or lodges.

“The trip was excellent from beginning to end. The Isabella II was a fine ship and the crew and guides were all of the highest quality. I would recommend them to others. For us, the ship was the perfect size – not too small and not too large.”Walter Squire
