Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands are some of the last truly un-spoilt regions of the world. The mysterious “White Continent,” with its multi-colored ice caps, glistening glaciers and towering snow-capped mountains, offers unparalleled scenery and photographic opportunities. Enormous numbers of penguins, whales, seals and seabirds congregate in the food-rich waters along the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic shores.
The specially designed Plancius expedition ship journeys south, taking full advantage of the long hours of daylight during the austral summer, their ice-strengthened hulls allowing us to navigate safely through the pack ice and narrow waterways. M/V “Plancius” was built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel and sailed for the Dutch Navy. In 2009, the vessel was completely rebuilt as a 116-passenger vessel and complies with the latest SOLAS-regulations (Safety of Life at Sea).
Today, the Plancius emerges as one of the most modern and well-appointed expedition cruise vessels on the ocean. The ship accommodates 116 passengers in 53 passenger cabins. All of these cabins are comfortable and well-appointed with private facilities and all have lower beds (either twin or double). All cabins have ample storage facilities and a writing desk and chair, as well as a flat screen TV for viewing movies. Premium cabins are furnished with upgraded linens. All cabins have outside views through either a porthole or window. In terms of facilities, the vessel offers a restaurant/lecture room on deck 3 and a spacious observation lounge (with bar) on deck 5 with large windows, offering full panorama view. M/V Plancius has large open deck spaces (with full walk-around possibilities on deck 3), giving excellent opportunities to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. The dining room comfortably seats the full complement of passengers and program staff, serving delicious meals prepared by a team of experienced, professional chefs.
M/V Plancius is comfortable and nicely decorated, but is still be primarily defined by an exploratory educational travel program, spending as much time ashore as possible. For such adventure, the ship’s zodiac excursions, guided by foremost Antarctic experts, provide the freedom to explore remote locations and observe Antarctica's abundant wildlife. M/V Plancius is staffed by 17 nautical crew members, 19 hotel staff (6 chefs, 1 hotel manager, 1 steward-barman and 11 stewards / cabin cleaners), 8 expedition staff (1 expedition leader and 7 guides-lecturers) and 1 doctor.
